Chhath Puja 2026 in Charlotte: dates and arghya times

Chhath Puja is four days of prayer to the Sun, and its two arghya offerings are timed to sunset and sunrise. Sunset and sunrise in Charlotte are nothing like the times printed for Patna or Delhi, so every time on this page is for Charlotte itself. In 2026 the main day, Sandhya Arghya, is Sunday, November 15.

Chhath Puja 2026 in Charlotte runs from Friday, November 13 to Monday, November 16. The four days in Charlotte, 2026

Day 1, Friday, November 13: Nahay Khay, a ritual bath and one simple meal, usually lauki, chana dal and rice. Day 2, Saturday, November 14: Lohanda and Kharna, a fast through the day that is broken after sunset (5:18 PM in Charlotte) with jaggery kheer and roti. Day 3, Sunday, November 15: Sandhya Arghya, a fast without water and the arghya to the setting sun at about 5:17 PM. Day 4, Monday, November 16: Usha Arghya to the rising sun at 6:59 AM, then parana, when the fast is broken.

Jaggery, wheat flour, ghee and puja items are year round staples. Call before you drive to ask about soop baskets, sugarcane and coconuts: we have not checked their shelves for Chhath.

Why the Charlotte times are different

The arghya is offered to the actual sunset and sunrise where you stand. After the clocks go back on November 1, Charlotte is 10 hours 30 minutes behind India, so a time printed for Bihar or Delhi does not apply here. The Shashthi tithi runs from 12:53 PM on Saturday, November 14 to 3:30 PM on Sunday, November 15, Eastern time. Daily sunrise, sunset and tithi times for any date are on our Charlotte panchangam.

Where families offer the arghya

The arghya is offered standing in water and facing the sun, traditionally at a river or pond ghat. Away from India, families use a lake or pond, or a tub of water at home. We have not found a public Chhath ghat event in the Charlotte area for 2026. If your group holds one, send it from the events page and it will show at the top of this page.

Offerings and thekua

The offerings go in a soop, a bamboo winnowing basket, or a daura, a larger bamboo basket: sugarcane, coconuts, bananas, citrus and other seasonal fruit, and thekua, a fried sweet of wheat flour and jaggery. The Kharna prasad is kheer made with jaggery instead of sugar. The grocers below carry the staples.
