Moving to Charlotte from India
This is the practical version, written for someone who has just landed at CLT with two suitcases or is about to. It covers the order things actually need doing in, and where the Indian community is concentrated so you are not starting from zero.
Where the community lives
The two biggest concentrations are University City and North Charlotte, and Ballantyne going south into Weddington. Concord and Kannapolis have grown quickly and are cheaper. Matthews, Indian Trail, Fort Mill and Huntersville all have established pockets. If schools are the priority, families tend to look at Ballantyne, Weddington and parts of Fort Mill.
Your first week
A US phone number and a bank account come first, because everything else asks for them. Most banks will open an account with a passport and visa documents; a Social Security number can follow. A local number makes apartment applications and job paperwork far easier.
Getting around
Charlotte is a driving city. The light rail covers a single line through uptown and University City, and buses are limited outside the core. Plan on a car within the first month. An international licence works initially but North Carolina expects you to convert to a state licence once you are a resident.
Finding a room first, an apartment later
Most people share for the first few months while they work out which corridor suits them. The roommate board on this site carries rooms and roommate posts with the rent, area, move-in date and lease length on each one.
Groceries and eating
Indian grocers cluster in University City and along the south corridor. Between them you can find everything from fresh curry leaves to regional spice brands, and most carry frozen items from home. The full list is in this guide.
