Before you move
A little preparation makes the first week easier.
Compare your trip to work at the times you will travel. Confirm the state, county, school district and utility providers for the address. A Charlotte-area mailing address alone does not answer all of these questions.
Keep identity documents, lease or housing paperwork, school records, vaccination records and insurance information accessible. Ask each school, bank or agency which originals and translations it accepts.
Confirm arrival arrangements with your employer, university or host. After entering the US, use the official CBP website to review your I-94 if one applies to your entry. Ask your immigration adviser about any discrepancy.
Your first week
Get connected, get settled and sort out the essentials.
Compare coverage at home and work before choosing a phone plan. Contact the bank you plan to use and confirm its identification and address requirements before visiting a branch.
Ask your landlord or seller which services are included and which accounts you must open. Electricity, water, gas, internet and trash arrangements depend on the exact property. Charlotte Water serves its own service area, not every town in the metro.

Settle in during your first month
Start time-sensitive applications early; this is a planning order, not an agency deadline.
Read NCDMV’s new-resident guidance for licensing, insurance, title and registration. Check the requirements for your current license and immigration documents before booking an appointment.
Ask your health insurer or employer how to find in-network primary care, a pediatrician if needed, and a pharmacy. Confirm coverage and how to transfer prescriptions directly with the provider.
Compare total monthly cost, commute, lease length and what is included. The room board can help with temporary or shared housing while you work out your plans.
