Regional Indian food in Charlotte, from Gujarati to Nepali

A lot of Indian menus in Charlotte cover the whole country at once. This page is for the other search: the food of one region, from a kitchen that says that is what it cooks. 21 places, grouped by region, each checked against the business’s own site, menu, posts or trading name in October 2026. Where a region has no restaurant we can verify, Gujarati thali and Kerala among them, we say so rather than pad the list. We do not publish hours or prices; call before you drive.

In short

No Charlotte restaurant lists a Gujarati thali on its own menu as of October 2026, but Jay Bhavani in Pineville serves Gujarati vegetarian street food like Kutch-style dabeli and methi pakora, Tai’s Kitchen caters Gujarati, Maharashtrian and Punjabi food, and Honest and The Spice Garden both serve a Punjabi thali. Hyderabadi biryani is the easiest regional food to find, at Nawabi Hyderabad House in Ballantyne and Concord, Ruchi in Ballantyne and Persis in north Charlotte and Fort Mill. Bengali food comes from Joy’s Kitchen, which delivers and caters, Nepali momo from Kasthamandap, Krazy Curry, Royal Biryani and Curry Court, and we could not verify a Kerala restaurant anywhere in the metro.

Good to know

Gujarati food, and the thali question

A Gujarati thali is the full plate: dal, kadhi, a shaak or two, rotli, rice, farsan and a sweet. We looked for one on every Charlotte menu we could find, and as of October 2026 none lists it. Subham Supermarket’s food court, Cafe Brundavan and Triveni Express all list thalis, but none of them calls it Gujarati. What you can get is Gujarati street food. Jay Bhavani in Pineville calls itself authentic Gujarati vegetarian street food, runs a 100% vegetarian kitchen, sells Kutch-style dabeli and a methi pakora it describes as a traditional Gujarati specialty, and keeps a separate Jain and Swaminarayan section made without onion and garlic. Honest on University City Boulevard says on its own site that it started as a family street cart in Ahmedabad in 1975, and its kitchen is meat-free. Tai’s Kitchen on Westinghouse Boulevard does catering and takeout across Maharashtrian, Gujarati and Punjabi food. If a restaurant adds a Gujarati thali, tell us and it goes on this page.

Gujarati snacks to take home

For farsan, Patel Brothers at 8109 University City Boulevard shares a plaza with Honest. The chain’s Patel’s Fresh Kitchen menu lists fafda, khaman dhokla, patra, sev khamni and methi thepla, but only at participating stores, and it says the menu varies by location, so call the Charlotte store before you drive over for them. Jay Bhavani’s menu also has a whole section of bhajiya, pakora and gota. The Indian grocery stores guide covers the rest of the grocers.

Hyderabadi biryani and Andhra cooking

Hyderabadi dum biryani is marinated meat and rice layered in a pot, sealed and slow cooked, usually served with mirchi ka salan and raita. It is the regional dish Charlotte does most often. Nawabi Hyderabad House in Ballantyne and in Concord both advertise authentic Hyderabadi flavors on their own sites, and Ruchi on Ballantyne Commons Parkway says it brings the soul of Hyderabad to Charlotte. Persis in Fort Mill says its story began in the royal kitchens of Hyderabad, and the north Charlotte Persis lists Hyderabadi among the things it is known for. For Andhra heat, Subham Supermarket’s food court in Ballantyne lists Vijayawada boneless biryani and gongura biryani, made with sour sorrel leaves, next to Hyderabadi dum. Biryani Pot near Concord Mills lists a Hyderabadi onion samosa and a karivepaku (curry leaf) special. The biryani guide has every place that serves biryani, by town.

Bengali food

Bengali cooking leans on mustard oil, panch phoron, freshwater fish and sweets made from fresh chhena: macher jhol, shorshe ilish, kosha mangsho, luchi with aloo dum, mishti doi. Kolkata biryani is gentler on spice than Hyderabadi and comes with a potato and usually an egg. In Charlotte the steadiest source is Joy’s Kitchen of Charlotte, which describes itself as authentic Bengali meals and catering, homestyle food delivered daily and ordered online, with Kolkata biryani as the dish it leads with. Taste of Bengal, which bills authentic Bengali, Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine and lists restaurants in Edison and Philadelphia, says on its own homepage that a new Charlotte location is coming soon, so it is not in the list yet. Durga Puja is traditionally when bhog, the shared offering meal of khichuri, labra and payesh, is served; any puja on our events board shows up on this page.

Chettinad and Tamil

Chettinad food comes from the Karaikudi area of Tamil Nadu and is built on black pepper, dried red chilli, fennel, star anise and kalpasi (stone flower): chicken Chettinad, pepper chicken, mutton chukka. Anjappar in Pineville says it serves Indian and Chettinad cuisine. Chennai Waala, a food truck that its own posts place at the OTC Food Truck Village on Catawba Avenue in Cornelius, puts parotta, egg kalakki and wedding-style chicken biryani up front. Subham’s food court lists Thalapakatti biryani, the Dindigul style, and Chettinadu chicken biryani. For dosa and tiffin, see the South Indian restaurants guide.

Kerala food: the gap

Kerala cooking is coconut, curry leaves and coconut oil: appam with stew, puttu and kadala, Malabar parotta with beef fry, fish molee, avial, and the Onam sadya served on a banana leaf. We could not find a Kerala restaurant in the Charlotte metro that we can verify. The nearest we found is Grand Malabar in Morrisville, near Raleigh. Nalan Indian Cuisine on East Woodlawn Road says its dishes travel from coastal Kerala to Lucknow, so ask what is Kerala-style that day. Unnis Taste of Kerala, a small catering service in Charlotte, lists appam and stew, puttu and kadala, kappa and Onam sadya on its site, but the newest notice there is from Onam 2024, so treat it as a phone call rather than a sure thing. The Charlotte Malayalee Association held its Onam 2026 celebration on 29 August; watch its site for the next one.

Nepali food

Nepali menus here centre on momo, steamed dumplings served with a tomato and sesame achar, plus jhol momo in broth, thukpa noodle soup, chowmein and sekuwa, meat marinated and grilled over a flame. Kasthamandap Kitchen in the Northlake area calls itself authentic Nepali Indian cuisine and lists chicken momo, Nepali-style chow mein and lamb sekuwa. Krazy Curry, in Pineville and Uptown, lists jhol momo and steamed momo it calls Nepali dumplings, and its Uptown location at 101 South Tryon Street bills its buffet as an Indian and Nepali feast. Royal Biryani on Monroe Road has a Taste of Nepal section with jhol momo, chili momo, chowmein and thukpa, and Curry Court in Monroe lists jhol momo and thukpa. For groceries, Central Market on Albemarle Road trades as an Indian and Nepali store.

Punjabi

Most North Indian restaurant menus in the US lean Punjabi: butter chicken, dal makhani, chole, tandoori. The thing worth seeking out is the thali, with dal, a paneer or vegetable curry, raita, rice, roti and a sweet on one plate. Honest and The Spice Garden, both fully vegetarian, list a Punjabi thali on their own sites. Mystic Spice in south Charlotte describes its food as flavors from the heart of North India. We did not find sarson da saag with makki di roti on a Charlotte menu we could check, so call and ask in winter, when it is in season. The vegetarian restaurants guide has every fully vegetarian kitchen.

How we checked

Every place on this page is here because its own website, menu, posts or trading name makes the regional claim, checked in October 2026. We do not guess a kitchen’s region from a name or from anyone’s background. If you cook a regional menu and you are not here, add your business free with Add a listing and send us the menu. For everything else, the Indian restaurants guide groups every Indian restaurant by part of town.
